I don’t like yoga.

Personally I’d rather do things like boxing, contact improv dance, biking, jiu jitsu; I enjoy those things. I also get injured and end up on the couch, grouchy because my pulled muscle barely lets me lift a cup of coffee. I’ve had to accept that now exercise is less about building strength and more about slowing my inevitable physical decline.

In Marine terms, I’m fighting a “tactical withdrawal” — and yoga is a key strategy.

I do yoga because my body likes yoga.

Recently I tried kundalini yoga and realized there are very direct benefits for male bodies like mine (well past the 50-year warranty). It is a form popularized by yogi Bhajan in the 60’s and 70’s, now practiced all over the world. That’s about all the historical context I’m going to give — you can google much more information if you like.

Suffice to say there are a lot of reasons to choose to practice kundalini yoga, ranging from the the deeply spiritual to the purely pragmatic. I tend to lean towards the pragmatic more than the spiritual — and here are the three that became immediately apparent in the first twenty…
