I’m a big fan of kaizen.

Incremental progress. “A little bit better every day.” It’s a true and tested strategy for self-improvement. Pretty much everyone can find something in their day that can be improved, right?

  • Make your bed in the morning.
  • Switch to decaf.
  • Find three things to be grateful for.

How could there be anything wrong with that?

Try this:

Incremental progress is privileged.

It gives the illusion that as long as you’re doing something, that’s enough.

Sometimes it’s not.

Incremental progress requires the luxury of time, which is the a resource that is absolutely not evenly distributed.

  • Ask anyone who has had to provide in-home care for a loved one and navigate the Byzantine labyrinth of forms and qualifications that is the U.S. healthcare system if switching to decaf is going to measurably improve their life.
  • Ask anyone who is working three jobs with overlapping schedules if making their bed in the morning really helps them feel more…
