How a Ghost Hunting RPG Fundraiser is Teaching Me to Let Go of Being In Charge and Enjoy the Ride Instead.

Left to right: Nathaniel, Zay, Peter, and Christina, on the set for “Unfinished Business” (Nov. 23rd 7:30pm CST on twitch.tv/worldbuilders)

Last night really pushed my edge.

I was taking part in the dress rehearsal for an upcoming Worldbuilders fundraiser — game designer Christina Ireland had decided to debut her “Unfinished Business” ghost-hunting RPG* as a way to give money to our nonprofit.

She’s also going to be letting us sell PDF copies of the game and some merch, as well, letting all the profits go to support our work creating bigger fundraisers for other charities. It’s the circle of geeky philanthropy!

The event is going to be livestreamed on our twitch channel, and so there was a somewhat complex system of computers, connections, cameras, cables, and probably lots of other c-words to get everything ready. I was the first one there, ready to help.

But there was honestly nothing for me to do.

I didn’t know what my job was this time.

I’ve done hundreds of similar productions — on stage, in studios, at schools and colleges and my basement.

I’ve been in each of the seats you see in the picture — usually in Nathaniel’s, running the board and switching the cameras and monitoring the stream.
