How to Have a Morning Routine When Your Mornings Aren’t Routine.
At the start of the day, one size does not fit all.
This is not another “here’s 13 things you should do before 8am because if you don’t you’ll die cold and penniless in the snow” article. I promise.
I am not going to tell you how to do your morning routine, because I don’t know you. Do you wake up grumpy?* Do you need coffee? Do you wake to dark winter rime on the windows, or to the gentle morning sun shining through the blinds with the sounds of waves lapping at the shore?
If it’s the latter, I kind of hate you, at least right now. But like many productivity nerds, I voyeuristically devour article after book after YouTube of the “Morning Practices Of The Mighty.”
It’s a compulsive delusion: if I just find the right routine, everything else will fall into place. I’ll be rich, healthy, I’ll have energy, I’ll be (slow, deep breath) productive.
The fantasy of the perfect morning routine is a seductive lie.
We should know better. If there was one routine to rule them all, there wouldn’t be so many articles, books, and YouTubes about it.
