It is kind of hilarious to me that you are not bothering to look through the comments to find the article on the FBI website, nor bother to look in the piece itself where the author has both linked to and quoted a professional journalist who wrote about this phenomenon.
As you seem to be TB;WR (that's "too busy, won't read") I'll sum up for you: the original scam was about false identities, and yes, it's convoluted, but scammers are clever, and all the AI part does is make it easier for them to remain un-caught for longer.
