I recently read another analogy that ADHD is like left-handedness, which I think does map better to the sudden increase in diagnoses (because there was an "epidemic" of left-handedness back when they stopped trying to force all kids to be right-handed). But I still think that stairs -- and the fact that knee-ability vacillates around context -- make the best analogy, and I'm glad it resonated with you!
