Thanks, James — I’m flattered that you read and resonated with the article (been admiring your writing for a while). I see what you’re saying, but I’m not sure that it’s that they are saying trans or agender people don’t exist as much as they don’t see the need for there to be a term specifically for them — because they consider themselves to be the default, as opposed to simply the majority. A friend of mine told me that he didn’t understand why I talked about being a “white cisgender man” when I wrote the yoga article, because it had nothing to do with race or gender. It occurred to me that it’s just another way of saying “I don’t see color” — not having to bother to state those things, or even think about them, is privilege in itself.
