The Day I Finally Understood the Question “What If This Was Easy?”

Coaches, planners, review templates love this question, but I hated it. Until I had this epiphany.

Do you hate the question too?

I’ve always been a sucker for a new weekly review template, a new planning method, a new journaling prompt, and variations on this prompt kept popping up:

What would this week look like if it were easy? was the chief culprit, and I absolutely dreaded when I’d come across the question during my weekly review (a la

). But I’d heard it from and others, as well, and it never failed to make me cringe inside.

I felt like I was missing something.

It seemed like the question was implying that my week, my project, my challenge, my obstacle, my whatever had some kind of secret step, some hidden lever or button that would make it suddenly morph (with transformer-noises) from the complex, over-busy, high-pressure form into something that would be simple, straightforward, and really no problem for any reasonable adult.

So why couldn’t I find that? It was just another part of the feeling I’ve always had, that almost everyone else around me — certainly all the successful ones — had been given a manual at some point called “How to Succeed at
