“I don’t know! It’s just not working!” When faced with technological problems, from a PowerPoint that won’t show on the projector to a database that won’t merge, a large percentage of people throw up their hands and ask someone they are hoping can help them fix it.

The Four Rules of Technology can help you be that someone, most of the time. Apply them, and you will be amazed at the results — and yes, I guarantee it.

TL;DR: Apply these rules to any problematic technology, in this order, and most of the time it will fix whatever’s wrong:

1. It works better if you plug it in.

2. It works better if you turn it on.

3. It sounds better when you turn it up.

4. When in doubt, trace the connections.

Really, that’s all you need to know. I’m often considered by my family, friends, and clients as “a tech guy” Most of the time? That role simply involves applying those rules. Literally nothing more, and yet I’m still the one they call.
