A while back I wrote an article about the missing ingredient you really, really need if you want a habit to work:

The TL;DR is that the missing ingredient is trust, something that I’d had to learn the hard way, wandering around a freezing parking lot looking for my car.

But I left some things out.

There are a couple of things you need to have before you can start trusting your tools.

I didn’t write about them, though, because they seem so simple and basic it is almost embarrassing to bring them up:

  1. You need to bring the tool.
  2. You need to use the tool.

See what I mean? How basic can you get?

I learned those lessons the hard way, too, first by not bringing my notebook with me everywhere and losing some really good ideas, and then later by not using the TIIMO app on my phone which led me to be late to pick up my grandson.
