There’s One Reason I Might Switch From Notion to Obsidian
This might be what a digital doomsday prepper looks like
Notion, the relational database app both beloved and despised by so many, is like Lego for productivity nerds.
With Lego, there’s basically two types of enthusiasts:
- Some people like to buy pre-packaged sets to build specific things — a Millenium Falcon, a castle, or a pirate ship. These come with stickers and instructions and little details that make it look exactly the way it is supposed to be.
- Others just want a big box of bricks in various colors to build whatever they want that day. It might not look quite as sleek or finished as the pre-made sets, but the joy of figuring out how to build it themselves is part of the value.
Notion is the latter; every other to-do or productivity app is the former. The biggest bug for some is the most attractive feature for others. To apply another metaphor, Notion is like the muscle car in the garage you tinker with on the weekends; other apps are like Teslas — they work, but you’ll have a hard time finding the engine, much less tinkering with it.
So where does Obsidian work into this metaphor?
